This is a deeply flawed book which deliberately confuses local history with the history of the Roman Catholic Church in the area. The final chapter is hardly believable and someone more cynical than I might well point out that the author comes in for a far share of praise there. There is, however, some useful information. Dedication.

To the working men and working women of Lucan this booklet of associations and of memories so dear to them, is, as a tribute of affection and esteem, most humbly dedicated.**

Preface

In compliance with the expressed wishes of many of the Lucan people, and of Visitors, the “Lucania” sees the light. Like the liner “Lucania” this booklet is now launched on the waters of the reading world. Many and exile of Lucan, many a lover of Sarsfield and of Sarsfield’s birthplace, will, it is hoped, give it a “cead mile failte,” [100,000 thousands welcomes. KF.] and give its speed of circulation, like its naval namesake, a record.

The author, with confidence, unreservedly commits it to the guardianship of the kind, generous, and uncritical. As it has not yet seen the censor’s sharp knife, before its publication, may the favourable gale of a kind public opinion steer it into the haven of success.

St. Mary’s, Lucan, 1902.

NOTE.

For any miracle recorded in these pages, and not approved by the Church, no other belief is claimed other than what is ordinarily given to to history, resting on human authority; and the appellation of Saint or Blessed, given to any person not canonized or beatified by the Church, is understood according to the usage and opinion of the authorities, which have recorded their names or actions.
