Preface

The writer has been induced to undertaken this little work in the hope that it may meet with a reception as favourable as that extended to his Handy Guide to “Memorable London Houses,” the popularity of which has created a demand for a third edition within a year.

The object is to indicate, on a plan which should render them easy of access and identification, those houses associated with the birth or residence of persons eminent for their talents or prominent in the history of the city; and avoiding biographical - which are indeed excluded by the necessity for portability in a work of the kind - to give as vivid a presentment, and of incidents and events which lend to them a special interest.

The temptation was great - though it had to be resisted - to enlarge on the attractions of the interior of some of these houses. Several of the most important being now used for public purposes, the stranger enjoys facilities for examining the admirable stucco ornamentations by Italian workmen, with which they abound.

The writer has to thank Mr. W. J. Fitzpatrick and Mr. J. P. Prendergast for much useful assistance, and to acknowledge a courteous readiness - more, a desire to facilitate this researches - on the part of many gentlemen, both in official and private stations, to whom he was an entire stranger, of which he can speak in no higher terms than to say it was truly and genuinely Irish.

Correction of possible errors, and suggestions for improvements in a future edition - should it be called for - are solicited.
